The marine industry has used connecting systems for decades to connect ships, barges, floating structures, and tug boats together when traveling, working, and docking on the waterways throughout the world. With many restraints and obstacles to overcome, ships, tugs, and barges fabricated are different in sizes and shapes, plus the use for a specified application requires engineering and design. |
There are many components and connectors utilized to connecting ship, boats, barges, and floating structures together. Most commonly used are industrial ratchets, barge ratchets, turnbuckle ratchets, barge winches, power winches, sheaves and directional blocks. Not to mention recovery hardware. |
For sea going vessels, ships have been proven to remain the number one way to move products around the world. Once only pulling or dragging a barges was used. Due to many restrictions, weather, and failed arrival dates due to slower traveling. Over the last decade, tugs connected to barges have become very popular. No only for less restrictions and cost savings, but the connecting systems, now being used, have proven to withstand most of the oceans bad weather conditions. With new designs and engineering mating a tug to a barge has become relative simple and can be accomplished with most connecting systems available today. |
There are several systems available today to connect a tug and barge together. The Artubar system was the first utilizing an axial system. Most to follow were modifications to the Artubar to correct some design issues. A new design of this connection system was the Articoupe. The Intercon connection system was designed to solve noticed issue of the Articouple design. |
The Bludworth-Cook system operates by establishing a pivot, or relative pitch point about the bow of the tug. This system has been in existence for many years, and they are designing a new version. The Hydraconn system uses a mixing of teeth engagement like the Articouple and Interconn, plus the hydraulic ram idea of the Artubar system. One of the newest connection systems is the Beacon-Jak. Utilizing some of the ideas of the Artubar with a different approach to the connecting system. More on these connection systems can be found here. |
The newest national and international patented connection system was originally designed to connect barges together. After testing the connector it was found to have incredible strength. With its simple design it can be retro fitted into many floating structures. When fabricating new products this connection system should be considered due to its cost effective design. This tough link connector offers many applications, large and small, when the connection needs to be solid and attached as one. |
